What You Seek, You Will Find

This week we are studying several chapters in Alma, Helaman, and 3 Nephi. One of the main questions is, "What causes the people to harden their hearts against the teachings of Christ."  In Alma 30 we read the story of Korihor and how he turned so hard from his teachings and the knowledge he had. What made him change his mindset from serving God to preaching against him after having a testimony? He actively taught against God and Christ, so much so that he denied their existence. What makes a person do that? In Korihor's case, he explains how he believed the advisory when he was told there wasn't a God and it was his mission to reclaim those lost souls. This was a message from the devil hoping to thwart the plan of happiness and salvation. I can't help but wonder how strong Korihor's testimony was in the beginning and how closely he tried to keep to the straight and narrow? Did he actively try to converse with God or did he do the bare minimum to get by? What ...

A Warning for Our Time

This week we're studying the chapters in the Book of Mormon warning us about the "Great and Abominable Church" that will plague the earth in the last days. We are there... it's been coming on for many years now, but I can really see the quickening of how wicked things are becoming.  2 Nephi 27-29 we learn that the lost portions of the Bible will be restored by an unlearned man and the work will be criticized by those who don't want to acknowledge the power of God. Many want to lead people astray for money, fame, riches, etc. and they will purposely make false claims or hide truths. This weeks scripture study helps to remind me that in these last days, we can't stand idle on the sidelines and take for granted our knowledge. We need to hold fast and recognize when things are being distorted by those who are actively seeking to direct us with false teachings. I have to say, it's not as easy to spot in some situations. I've had friends who have walked dow...

An Ordinary Man

This week I'm learning about the law of Moses and the teachings of Abinadi. In Mosiah 14:2 I was struck by the way our Savior, Christ, is portrayed. It says, " For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground; he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him there is no beauty that we should desire him."  Christ will not come with dashing good looks, born into privilege with money to throw around. He will not be someone many would look to and follow simply because of a celebrity status or his position. He will be an ordinary man, one that people would need to look beyond the outward appearance and see the inner light to know who He is. This is something I've known growing up, that Christ was an ordinary man. But reading this scripture this week gave me new meaning behind it. The way Abinadi describes Christ is "a tender plant, as a root out of dry ground; he hath no form nor comeliness..." He will not be perceived a...

Take Upon Us His Name

Hello All! This is a newer Blog for me that I can use during my studies in my pursuit for an online degree with BYU-Idaho Online. I'm currently taking an HTML class along with University Studies and a Religious course. Part of my classes is sharing with others what I'm finding and learning.  This week we've been studying the doctrine of Christ. The need to learn of Him, repent, be baptized in His name, and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, (a constant companion to guide and direct you in this life.) The question was asked during our study, " Why did Christ, a perfect being and the Lamb of God, have need of being baptized? " In 2 Nephi 31:5 I read and understood the reasoning behind Christ being baptized and receiving the Holy Ghost in the form of a dove. He was giving us an example to follow, being obedient to the teachings and commandments of the Father, to fulfill all righteousness. Christ didn't need to be baptized himself, but following the commandments...
