What You Seek, You Will Find
This week we are studying several chapters in Alma, Helaman, and 3 Nephi. One of the main questions is, "What causes the people to harden their hearts against the teachings of Christ."
In Alma 30 we read the story of Korihor and how he turned so hard from his teachings and the knowledge he had. What made him change his mindset from serving God to preaching against him after having a testimony? He actively taught against God and Christ, so much so that he denied their existence. What makes a person do that?
In Korihor's case, he explains how he believed the advisory when he was told there wasn't a God and it was his mission to reclaim those lost souls. This was a message from the devil hoping to thwart the plan of happiness and salvation. I can't help but wonder how strong Korihor's testimony was in the beginning and how closely he tried to keep to the straight and narrow? Did he actively try to converse with God or did he do the bare minimum to get by? What do I do? Do I do the bare minimum or do I actively pursue a relationship with God and Christ? Would I be subject to turning away from the gospel if I had questions and looked for answers in the wrong places?
Korihor said it was easy to believe and decieve because of how pleasing these answers were to the carnal mind. I have to believe many followed him for the same reason. Korihor was so converted to leading away believers that he even denied, not only his knowledge, but we learn he received signs and answers from God and Christ which he denied. He even dared the Lord to give him a sign, which Alma explained would cause him to go dumb (mute) if he asked one more time. In the end, Korihor was left alone to suffer in muted silence until his death.
Alma 30:60 tells us, "And thus we see the end of him who aperverteth the ways of the Lord; and thus we see that the devil will not bsupport his children at the last day, but doth speedily drag them down to chell."
This is a sad on so many levels because after Korihor is struck dumb, he explains he knew all along, but we deceived. Korihor fell hard. For me, and especially in these trying times, I really need to have a strong relationship with God and with Christ. "What you seek, you will find." What do I want to put my time and energy into? If I want to find a strong relationship with my Father and my Savior, I need to put in the time so when the adversary comes knocking on my door, I will not be deceived.
The story of Kohor reminds me of Mark Hoffman and his pure hated of the church after being raised in it and serving a mission. Mark was left without use his right arm after an accident in prison. Both he and Kohor reaped with they showed in the end with their active complaining against the church.
